Usa_spain_1

USA 2 Spain 0

I love Soccer...

The US just beat the #1 ranked team in the world (Spain) in the semis of the FIFA Confederation cup. This was a bigger upset than had the Spanish beat the US in Basketball in the Olympics last summer. The Spanish have several multimillion dollar NBA Stars and Pau Gasol is the second best player on the NBA champion Lakers and Rubio will be taken 2 or 3rd in the NBA draft.

Spain had won its last 15 games, hadn't lost in 35 (2 and 1/2 years) and hadn't been scored on in close to 500 mins. El Streako es el overo.

The US got torched by Italy 3-1 and Brazil 3-0 in the first two games and looked pathetic. I was watching the ticker on Sunday during the Open when the it said, Brazil and USA advance? I thought it was a typo....figured they were done.

In the third game..the US beat Egypt 3-0 and Brazil trounced Italy 3-0. Which is exactly what was needed. This is like a team coming back from 8 runs in the bottom of the 9th in baseball...twice. So by a miracle the US got to go and get slaughtered by Spain..the best team in the world...hopefully they would lose with pride.

I followed the first half via the internet. They had people blogging....updated every 30 seconds. Imagination at it's finest. The US was hanging tough and actually went ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute and it stayed that way till halftime. I went to lunch to watch the rest and it was like a shooting gallery for Spain...shot, after shot after, save, after shot...they peppered the US. But that is why soccer is so great..the best team doesn't always win...heart and luck play their parts....The US even countered a few times and got another goals in the second.

Great coaching....they gave the Spanish the flanks let them cross as many balls in as they wanted. We have big ole 6-4 brutes

in the middle so it played into our strength. Too bad for Spain that Pau Gasol wasn't their striker.

The Ref tried to help the Spanish by throwing one of our guys out of the game for something that wasn't even a foul much less a red card giving the Spanish a man advantage for the last 15 mins. The US always gets jobbed by the refs in competition. I wish someone would let them know that Obama is president now and the dickhead is gone already. They have thrown 4 of our guys out for questionable shit already...playing Brasil or Italy is tough enough with 11 guys....with 9...impossible.

Brazil will prolly smoke us but...ya never know. The best team doesn't always win.

My kids and grandkids are heart and knee deep in soccer. We don't get too much in the way of TV soccer, and the paperpaper barely has room for the weather report, let alone national and international sports. I enjoyed your post and your enthusiasm for the game.
